Why No Chew Necklace Is Indestructible (And Why That’s Actually a Good Thing)

By Brian Evans – Founder of Chew Necklace UK

It’s probably one of the questions I’ve been asked more than any other since we started selling chew necklaces back in 2014.

“Which one is indestructible?”

I completely understand why parents ask.

If your child is a strong chewer, you’ve probably watched them chew through hoodie strings, school collars, pencil toppers and perhaps even a few chew necklaces too.

Naturally, you’re looking for something that will last.

I wish I could tell you there was a chew necklace that could never be damaged.

But after more than a decade in this industry, I’d rather be honest with you.

There isn’t one.

And believe it or not…

That’s actually a good thing.

Let’s Think About What a Chew Necklace Is Designed to Do

A chew necklace isn’t a toy.

It’s not a piece of engineering designed to survive unlimited force.

It’s a sensory aid.

Its purpose is to provide safe oral sensory input while remaining comfortable to wear and, above all else, safe for the person using it.

Those priorities matter.

If It Could Never Break…

Here’s a question I sometimes ask parents.

“What would an indestructible chew necklace actually have to be made from?”

The answer is…

Something incredibly hard.

Something incredibly rigid.

Something that simply doesn’t give.

Personally, I wouldn’t want anyone chewing on something like that.

A good chew necklace needs to have a little flexibility.

It should absorb some of the force created during chewing.

That’s part of what makes it comfortable and safer to use.

Strong Doesn’t Mean Unbreakable

We sell products designed for different chewing strengths.

Some are suitable for light chewers.

Others are designed for moderate or strong chewers.

But even our toughest products have limits.

That’s not because they’re poor quality.

It’s because every material has a limit.

Just as trainers wear out with use, or school shoes eventually need replacing, chew products are consumable items. Regular use—especially by someone who bites with significant force—will eventually cause wear.

Every Child Chews Differently

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that children don’t all chew in the same way.

Some gently chew with their front teeth.

Others bite repeatedly with their back molars.

Some chew occasionally.

Others chew for hours every day.

And then there are children who don’t just chew—they twist, pull, stretch and tug at the product as well.

Those differences have a huge impact on how long any chew necklace will last.

I’ve Had Customers Tell Me…

One parent once told me,

“This necklace lasted nearly a year.”

A few weeks later another customer bought exactly the same product.

They contacted us saying,

“It lasted two days.”

Was one product better than the other?

No.

The difference was how it was being used.

That’s something no manufacturer can completely control.

Quality Still Matters

Although no chew necklace lasts forever, quality absolutely matters.

At Chew Necklace UK, we carefully select products that are manufactured using high-quality materials and designed specifically for oral sensory use.

Our silicone chew necklaces are made from:

100% food-grade silicone

FDA-compliant silicone

Free from BPA, PVC, phthalates, latex and lead

Fitted with breakaway safety clasps

They are designed to provide a safe alternative to chewing clothing, fingers or unsafe household items.

But even the best materials need replacing once they show signs of wear.

Inspect Before Every Use

One piece of advice I always give is this:

Take a few seconds to check the chew necklace regularly.

Look for:

  • Small tears
  • Cracks
  • Deep bite marks
  • Areas becoming thin
  • Loose or damaged clasps

If you notice any damage, it’s time to replace it.

It’s a simple habit that helps keep chewing safe.

Sometimes a Different Product Is the Better Answer

Occasionally, we hear from customers who tell us that every chew necklace they’ve tried has been damaged very quickly.

When that happens, I don’t immediately recommend another necklace.

Instead, I ask a few questions.

Sometimes the person may benefit from a product designed for stronger chewers.

Sometimes they may prefer a different texture, such as fabric instead of silicone.

And occasionally, their level of chewing suggests that a chew necklace alone may not be the complete answer. They may benefit from a wider sensory plan developed with an occupational therapist or other professional who understands their individual sensory needs.

Every person is different, and finding the right support often means looking at the bigger picture.

Honesty Builds Trust

One thing we’ve always believed as a family business is that we’d rather tell customers the truth than make promises we can’t keep.

Could we advertise our products as “indestructible”?

Perhaps.

Would it be accurate?

No.

I’d much rather tell you exactly what to expect.

Because if you know how chew necklaces are designed to work, you’re far more likely to choose the right one—and be happy with it.

My Advice After 11 Years

If there’s one thing I’d like parents to remember, it’s this:

Don’t judge a chew necklace by whether it lasts forever.

Judge it by whether it helps.

Does it reduce chewing on clothing?

Does it help your child concentrate?

Does it provide comfort during anxious moments?

Does it give them a safe outlet for oral sensory input?

If the answer is yes, then it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.
