By Brian Evans – Founder of Chew Necklace UK
One of the questions we’re often asked is:
“How long should a chew necklace last?”
It’s a perfectly reasonable question.
After all, when you buy anything, you’d like to know how long you can expect it to last.
The honest answer?
It depends.
I know that’s probably not the answer you were hoping for!
But after supplying chew necklaces to families across the UK since 2014, I’ve learned that there simply isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
What I can tell you is what we’ve seen over the years.
Every Chew Necklace Tells a Story
One thing I always find interesting is looking at a chew necklace that’s been used every day for several months.
It tells you a lot about the person using it.
Some come back looking almost brand new.
Others show gentle bite marks around the edges.
Some have become slightly smoother where they’ve been chewed repeatedly.
Occasionally we’ll see one that’s been worked incredibly hard by a determined chewer.
Every one is different.
What Normal Wear Looks Like
After around six months of regular use, it’s perfectly normal for a chew necklace to show signs that it’s been doing its job.
You might notice:
- Slight surface marks from chewing
- A smoother texture where it’s been bitten repeatedly
- A small amount of colour dulling
- Minor cosmetic wear
None of this usually affects how the product works.
It’s simply part of everyday use.
Rather like a favourite pair of shoes becoming comfortable over time.
What Isn’t Normal
There are also things that tell us it’s time for a replacement.
These include:
- Deep tears
- Splits
- Cracks
- Pieces missing
- Damage around the clasp
- Material becoming very thin
Whenever we see this type of wear, our advice is always the same.
Replace the product.
No chew necklace is designed to be used once it’s damaged.
The Biggest Difference Isn’t Time…
It’s the Person Using It
Two children could own exactly the same chew necklace.
One might still look fantastic after six months.
The other may need replacing much sooner.
Why?
Because everyone chews differently.
Some children gently mouth the pendant while reading.
Others bite firmly using their back teeth.
Some only use it when they’re anxious.
Others chew throughout the entire day.
There isn’t a right or wrong way.
It’s simply how their sensory needs present themselves.
We’ve Learned Not to Compare
Over the years, we’ve had customers tell us:
“This is the longest-lasting chew necklace we’ve ever bought.”
And others say:
“My son managed to damage it in a week.”
Both experiences can be true.
That’s why we never compare one person’s experience with another’s.
Sensory needs are individual.
So are chewing habits.
Looking After Your Chewelry
Although chewing naturally causes wear, there are a few simple ways to help your chew necklace last as long as possible.
✔ Clean it regularly using the care instructions provided.
✔ Inspect it before use.
✔ Replace it if signs of damage appear.
✔ Choose the correct chew strength for the individual.
Perhaps the most important tip is choosing the right product in the first place.
A child who needs firm resistance will usually wear out a product designed for light chewing much more quickly.
Sometimes Fabric Lasts Longer…
…and sometimes silicone does.
That surprises a lot of people.
We’ve found that some children who constantly destroy silicone products hardly damage a fabric chew bracelet at all.
Others are exactly the opposite.
It’s one of the reasons we stock both.
There isn’t a material that’s “better.”
There’s simply the one that’s better suited to the individual.
A Chew Necklace Isn’t Meant to Last Forever
I sometimes compare chew necklaces to trainers.
You wouldn’t expect someone who runs every day to wear the same pair forever.
The more they’re used, the more they’ll naturally wear.
Chewelry is much the same.
If it’s showing signs of being well-used, that’s often because it’s been providing exactly the support it was designed to give.
What Makes Me Smile
One of my favourite emails from customers isn’t the one saying,
“It still looks brand new.”
It’s the one saying,
“My son hasn’t chewed his school jumper since wearing this.”
Or…
“My daughter now wears it every day.”
Because that’s what really matters.
A chew necklace isn’t there to sit in a drawer looking perfect.
It’s there to help someone feel calmer.
More focused.
More comfortable.
If it does that, then it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.
My Advice After 11 Years
If you’ve reached the point where your chew necklace has been used every day for months, don’t just ask yourself:
“How does it look?”
Ask yourself:
- Has it helped?
- Has it reduced chewing on clothing?
- Has it become part of everyday life?
- Has it helped your child feel calmer?
If the answer is yes, then it has probably been one of the best investments you’ve made.
Eventually every chew necklace reaches the end of its life.
That’s completely normal.
What’s important is replacing it before it becomes worn or damaged, so it can continue providing safe and reliable sensory support.
